Union Grove State Park

30828 471st Avenue

Rich glacial soils support a lush growth of native woods in this hidden treasure. Horseback riders, hikers, bikers and cross-country skiers enjoy several miles of trail through the forest along Brule Creek. The trees and plants attract a variety of birds sure to keep botanists and birdwatchers entertained for hours. Campers enjoy the quiet well-shaded campsites, and the horse camp is the perfect base for a weekend of riding.

Union Grove State Park began as a County Park around 1936. The Brule Creek was dammed to create a small lake. The lake has since filled with silt and the dam was removed. The land was leased to the State of South Dakota in 1946. Since then the park has been host to residents and vacationers alike.

The horse trails are very nice. The terrain has variety that challenges the conditioned rider/ horse; yet is suitable for novice riders or out of shape/recuperating horses. The horse parking/staging area is too small. With as many horse back riders that use the park; it would be nice if it could be enlarged or better yet, make a separate staging area for day riders.

Very quiet, a bit of a challange for a forty foot motorhome but dooable. Top of the mountain so you get 4g with Verizon. Our first time was 2015 and now is 2018. There is an additional $6.00 fee that the park charges in addition to the fees already paid to the company on thier web site. I think its reserve America but dont quote me.

Very peaceful, friendly place to camp. The campground spots are spacious. The bathrooms/showers are beyond exceptional. The campground hosts make their rounds and make sure you enjoy your stay. We didn't walk on the trails because most of our stay was without much wind and therefore felt the trails would be too buggy. We walked the roads around the park every day and enjoyed campfire in the evening. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! We will be back.

Great park! Good hiking trails. Well maintained. Excellent bathrooms (four private bathrooms). Amazing hosts. No water or sewer at sites so plan accordingly. Ticks were bad when I was there (July).
