Good Earth State Park At Blood Run

48072 270th Street

Good Earth State Park southeast of Sioux Falls is an important cultural and historical site as well as a unique nature retreat  adjacent to the most developed and populated part of our state. The site itself is one of the oldest sites of long-term human habitation in the United States. The river, abundant wildlife, fertile flood plains, availability of pipestone (catlinite) and protection from winds made the area an important gathering place for seasonal ceremonies and a significant trading center for many tribal peoples from 1300 - 1700 A.D.

During this time, occupants were primarily Oneota Tradition Peoples, including Omaha, Ponca, Ioway and Otto, but many other tribes were attracted and participated in trading agricultural product as well as hides, pelts, horses, and pipestone (catlinite).

This is the largest Oneota cultural site discovered to date in the upper Midwest. There are two other significant Oneota cultural sites located respectively in southwest Iowa and central Missouri.

A very nice state park just outside of Sioux Falls on the border of Iowa and South Dakota. When you come in, there is a nice visitor's center that contains exhibits and free walking sticks that you can borrow. The trails are kept up well and nicely maintained with lots of maps posted along the way. In addition to maps, there are informational signs to read and rest rooms which can come in handy. There were picnic tables (pictured) and lots of people with dogs so it's pet friendly (although pets aren't allowed in the visitor's center). All in all it's a great place to check out of you are in the area.

A beautiful visitors center and wonderful trails. During our visit we we're lucky enough to see a bald eagle from observation deck number 2. Even though it is winter the terrain is such that I was able to bring my kids and pull them being me in our sled.

This is a brand new park just outside of Sioux Falls to the east. The various loops are short (each less than a mile) and easily navigated. There are many informational signs and a couple of great viewing platforms. One of the trails provides walk-in access to the single reservable campsite on the property which is beside the river for canoe access. One of the other reviews is correct in that, if you use Google Maps it will take you to the very rear of the property which does not have a public entrance. An edit for the Google Maps location has been submitted.

A work in progress but a much needed park along the river.
