10 Fun Things to Do on New Year’s Eve in South Dakota

South Dakota, home of the Black Hills and to more than 860,000 people, is host to many entertaining New Year’s Eve events. Whether it’s a raging concert or a more intimate evening of food and drinks, South Dakota offers a multitude of New Year’s Eve experiences—don’t forget to take a few selfies and make a few memories. Here are some of the best New Year’s Eve events happening in the state! 

New Year’s Eve in Deadwood, Deadwood, SD

During the celebration, it’s said that the main street in the historic city of Deadwood comes alive. The ball drops from the Historic Franklin Hotel veranda at midnight. While you’re waiting for the clock to strike twelve, visit local businesses on the street that stay open with New Year’s Eve special deals and celebrations. 

WaTiki’s New Year’s Eve Party, Rapid City, SD

WaTiki is an indoor waterpark resort that offers New Year’s Eve room package specials. Rent a few rooms with family and friends, and celebrate the new year waterpark-style. They also feature a midnight balloon drop as well as family-friendly movie showings, extended tiki bar hours, prize giveaways, and a dinner buffet.

New Year’s Eve Party at Rushmore Plaza Holiday Inn, Rapid City, SD

It starts at 7 p.m. and ends after the new year hits. This New Year’s Eve party features not just one ball dropping at midnight but rather 8,000 balloons. Any and all ages are welcome at the balloon drop, but the dancing in the Black Hills Ballroom and the Dakota Ballroom is limited to those 21 years and older.

Dueling Duo New Year’s Eve Show, Aberdeen, SD

This event features a dueling piano request show, which includes Andy Gibson, Ryno, and Dan Witte. Event-goers will also be able to participate in a silent auction, a wine pull, and other fun activities. There are several ticket levels that are different prices and include different amenities. Whichever ticket level you purchase, fun is sure to be had.

Mead Masquerade, Yankton, SD

You guessed it—the Mead Masquerade is indeed a masquerade ball. Tickets round out at $100 per person, and the event offers food, music, dancing, magic, and memories. This is the second edition of the masquerade ball; people enjoyed themselves so much they brought it back for a second rendition.  

New Year’s Eve Parade & Craft Event, Delmont, SD

Perhaps staying out until midnight or later isn’t quite how you like to spend your time—even on New Year’s Eve. Visit this event in Delmont, and view the New Year’s Eve Parade at 1 p.m. All are welcome to peruse the craft booths at the Legion Hall. Have some Christmas money left over? Maybe it’s time to buy yourself a quality hand-crafted gift.

Ladies of the 80s New Year’s Eve Party, Watertown, SD

A musical tribute to the girls and guys who rocked the ’80s, the Ladies of the 80s New Year’s Eve Party will include non-stop impersonations of the top supergroups of the smashing decade of the 1980s. The event is limited to those who are 21 and older, and it goes from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. at a cost of $15 per person. Don’t miss this tribute to the totally awesome ’80s.

Sioux Falls New Year’s Eve 2018, Sioux Falls, SD

Time is moving forward and why not celebrate it with the party tribute band, Time Machine. Time Machine will bring you back to several different decades—complete with costumes. They’ll play five different music genres throughout the night, including Classic and Current Country, the ’70s Pop/Funk/Disco, and the ’80s Pop and Hair Bands. 

Black Hills Symphony Orchestra, Rapid City, SD

The title of this year’s show is “Heroes & Villains.” Listen to selections like “Habanera” from Bizet’s Carmen, the “William Tell Overture,” and pieces from Superman, Wonder Woman, and Lawrence of Arabia. The show will begin at 8 p.m. at the Rapid City Performing Arts Center. Let the beauty of music guide you into the new year.

Winter Wonderland, Sioux Falls, SD

Sometimes ringing in the new year surrounded by dancing and loud music isn’t how you want the new year to begin. Visit Winter Wonderland until midnight and be dazzled by holiday lights and music. There are at least 400 wreaths, 270 decorated trees, 275 decorated light poles, and a half mile of rope lights. Spike some hot cocoa with Bailey’s and walk the Winter Wonderland to wrap up 2018.
